All applicants for a CCDO card qualify through industry assessment, by obtaining a relevant NVQ level or by some approved training.
Demolition operators are required to undertake a theory test to demonstrate their knowledge and a practical test of ability.
All those applying for a CCDO Card have to pass a touch screen Health, Safety & Environment Test and renewal is necessary after a set number of years. This is to ensure that skills and knowledge do not become out of date.
The advantage of having a CCDO card as opposed to a standard CSCS card is that the range of CCDO cards is specific to the type of work.
Categories include the usual Operative, Labourer and Supervisor but also the more specialised Mattockman, Topman and Reclamation and Salvage Operative.
They therefore demonstrate to employers that the CCDO Card holders have the appropriate qualifications for the job they do and have had heath and safety training that is relevant to the specific tasks.
CCDO card holders should be able to gain access to demolition sites since employers will have confidence they can operate competently and safely there.
The same cannot perhaps be said in the case of the holder of a standard CSCS card who may be perfectly competent on a normal construction site but is unaware of the particular dangers that demolition poses.
