L1 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment

What is the course?

The L1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment is a five-day course aimed at all personnel working in a construction environment. It offers an introduction to health and safety awareness, and attendees will learn how to reduce the risk of injury, both to themselves and others, whilst working on site. This qualification is also a prerequisite for anyone applying for a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Labourer Card.

Course content

Risk Assessment, Health and Safety

  • Awareness of health hazards in a construction environment
  • Identifying asbestos and other dangerous materials
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in handling dangerous materials

Manual Handling Safety

  • Overview of necessary regulations for manual handling, mechanical lifting, and moving and storage of materials
  • Reducing the risk of injury when handling equipment
  • Correct procedures for reporting accidents and hazard risks

Working Safely at Height

  • Overview of necessary regulations for working at height
  • Awareness of height related hazards
  • Proper equipment use whilst working at height

Plant and Equipment Safety

  • Plant and equipment safety protocol and regulations
  • Awareness of potential health and injury risks
  • Reducing plant and machinery-related hazards

How is the course taught and assessed?

All course material is delivered in a classroom environment by a health and safety expert. The course involves a combination of both individual and group work, and assessment will be based on participation in group tasks, as well as the results of a multiple choice exam.

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be presented with a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This remains valid for life and does not need to be renewed.

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge of construction site safety issues is required in order to take part in the course, although you should have a fluent command of both written and spoken English.
